Brahmavihara (Sublime Abodes) and Apramaṇa (Immeasurable Mind) Meditation Retreat

Instruction Language: English
Prerequisite: none, all levels of practitioners are welcome
First-time Participant: Please click here to review what you should expect at our retreats

5/23 3 PM Check-in | 5/27 12 PM Conclusion | 5/27 2-4 PM Post-retreat teatime social

This retreat introduces the four Brahmavihara meditations taught by the Buddha: loving-kindness (mettā), compassion (karuṇā), appreciative joy (muditā), and equanimity (upekkhā). These four practices form a complete system of meditation training for developing concentration (samadhi) and absorption (jhāna). Participants will be guided systematically in expanding the mind in all directions through Brahmavihara practice, leading to the development of Immeasurable Mind Concentration (apramaṇa citto samādhi).

Each of the four Brahmavihara supports the mind in a distinct way. Loving-kindness develops goodwill. Compassion responds wisely to suffering. Appreciative joy (muditā) serves as an antidote to unhappiness and jealousy. Equanimity strengthens balance and steadiness of mind. Together, these four practices help remove ill will, harmful intentions, and disturbed mental states, while strengthening clarity and stability of mind. Each of them can be cultivated as a basis for developing concentration (samadhi) and absorption (jhāna), and they provide an important foundation for further development of insight meditation (vipassana).

The cultivation of the Brahmavihara was strongly recommended by the Buddha, especially for lay practitioners, because these practices are greatly beneficial for oneself, for family life, and for harmony within the wider community. The Buddha also taught that the practice of the Brahmavihara is the most excellent way to accumulate merit and serves as a foundation for the cultivation of the Perfections (pāramitā).

At Amata Meditation Center, Brahmavihara Concentration meditation is taught as an essential classical training preserved in the early Buddhist tradition and as an important foundation for deeper meditation practice. Participants will receive clear step by step instruction that can continue to support their meditation after the retreat.

This retreat is suitable for beginners who wish to learn these techniques in a systematic way, and for experienced practitioners who would like to refine their jhāna training and stabilize Immeasurable Mind Concentration (apramaṇa citto samādhi). Participants will also have opportunities for questions and answers with Ven. Dr. Dhammadipa Sak almost every day during the retreat to support their meditation practice.

Sixteen Phases (soḷasākāra) of Mindfulness of Breathing (ānāpānasati)

Instruction Language: English
Prerequisite: none, all levels of practitioners are welcome.
First-time Participant: Please click here to review what you should expect at our retreats

9/05 3 PM Check-in | 9/12 12 PM Conclusion | 9/12 2-4 PM Post-retreat teatime social

This seven day meditation retreat introduces the complete training of the sixteen phases (soḷaākāra) of Mindfulness of Breathing (ānāpānasati), a classical meditation system taught by the Buddha that leads step by step from simple awareness of breathing to deep concentration (jhāna) and insight (vipassanā).

Unlike many meditation methods that emphasize either tranquility (samatha) or insight (vipassanā) separately, the sixteen phases of anapanasati integrate both within a single continuous path of practice. Through this systematic training, participants learn how to calm the body, stabilize the mind, and gradually develop direct understanding of impermanence (aniccā), unsatisfactoriness (dukkha), and non self (anatta) through careful observation of each breath.

The practice unfolds through four contemplations (anupassanā): contemplation of body (kāya), feelings (vedanā), mind (citta), and mental objects (dhammā). These correspond directly to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (satipatthana), ensuring that the whole range of human experience is included in the meditation training. In this way, participants receive guidance in a complete and balanced approach to meditation grounded in early Buddhist teaching.

Throughout the retreat, meditators will be guided step by step in developing stable attention on the breath, calming bodily formations, refining awareness of feeling and mind, and gradually cultivating insight into the nature of experience. This systematic approach supports both the pacification of mental defilements (kilesa) and the weakening of the fetters (samyojana), while establishing a strong foundation for both concentration and wisdom.

This retreat is suitable for both beginners who wish to establish a clear meditation method and experienced practitioners who would like to deepen their understanding of the classical sixteen phase structure of anapanasati. Participants will learn how to apply the practice in a practical and sustainable way that can continue beyond the retreat.

Satipatthana Meditation Retreat

Instruction Language: English
Prerequisite: Prior attendance of at least two Brahmavihara retreats

11/21 3 PM Check-in | 11/28 12 PM Conclusion | 11/28 2-4 PM Post-retreat teatime social

“There is one direct path for the purification of beings, for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of pain and distress, for the attainment of the right method, and for the realization of Nibbana. This is namely the practice of the four establishments of mindfulness.” (DN 22: Mahasatipatthana Sutta)

Satipatthāna (four establishments of mindfulness), also known as Vipassanā or Insight Meditation, is the practice of establishing right mindfulness on the four aspects of body, feeling, mind, and dharma. Through this practice one understands the nature of arising and passing away, impermanence, dukkha, and non-self. Through this realization one can be liberated from distress and rebirths, and attain sainthood.
